Zero fret - Wikipedia
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_fret
- A zero fret is a fret placed at the headstock end of the neck of a banjo, guitar, mandolin, or bass guitar. It serves one of the functions of a nut: holding the strings the correct distance above the other frets on the instrument's fretboard. A separate nut is still required to establish the correct string spacing when a zero fret is used. Contents
Zero Fret Guitar Pros And Cons - The Guitar Gear Guru
- https://theguitargearguru.com/zero-fret-guitar-pros-and-cons/
- The zero fret is a fret used in place of a typical guitar string nut. A zero fret is placed on an instrument’s fretboard where the nut would usually sit. The strings anchor to this fret and vibrate off of it rather than a string nut. Directly behind the zero fret is what looks like a regular guitar nut with extra deep slots.
What is a Zero Fret? - Wired Guitarist
- http://www.wiredguitarist.com/2017/03/14/what-is-a-zero-fret/
- The Zero Fret’s job is to do part of the nut’s job by setting the string height over the fretboard when being played open (without fretting). The nut still has a purpose when there is a zero fret, though, and that is to set the string spacing before going to the tuners. You might be wondering why anyone would want to do this.

Zero Frets - Fylde Guitars
- https://fyldeguitars.com/zero-frets.html
- Zero Frets | Intonation | Roger Bucknall | Workshop Notes | Fylde Guitars. On an average guitar, with 19 frets, there are 120 possible notes ( some repeated of course) , 114 of which are formed by holding the string onto a polished nickel silver fret, and the other six notes by holding the string in a groove in a piece of bone. I could never ...
Zero Frets: How to Treat Them When Levelling Frets - Haze Guitars
- https://hazeguitars.com/blog/zero-frets-and-fret-work
- Just treat the zero fret like any other fret. It makes complete sense when you think about it. You can finger a guitar at any position and that fret beside your finger becomes the ‘zero’ point for that string. For all intents and purposes, you’ve shortened the scale length of that string to wherever you’re fretting.

Zero fret - Gibson Acoustic - Gibson Brands Forums
- https://forum.gibson.com/topic/128150-zero-fret/
- 62burst. Some Gibson classicals back in the 1960's had a zero fret. Can't remember which models or years. Zero frets have something of a bad rep due to the number of manufacturers who have used it as a way of bypassing cutting the nut accurately. Fylde are a good example of a high quality guitar maker who use zero frets.

- @bigbadmouse It takes less labor to cut the nut for a zero fret: The nut slots need to be cut for string separation only: The depth of the cut does not matter. Presumably, installing/leveling the zero fret + cutting the less picky nut slots takes less labor (or less skilled labor) than properly cutting a traditional nut. Or so I've read.

Nuts vs. zero frets??? - seven string
- https://www.sevenstring.org/threads/nuts-vs-zero-frets.220832/
- The two parts of the nut (string slot width and depth) are on 2 separate piece, allowing you to don't care about depth when making the string guide, and don't care about string spacing and size of the slot when placing the zero fret. But if you want to have the "tonal" advantages of a zero fret without it, you can always go for brass nut.
